When I was pregnant, I followed along the month descriptions telling me that at one month my baby was the size of a grain of rice, at six months my baby was the size of a cantaloupe and by nine months they were size of a watermelon. When they are born and you hold them in your hands for the first time, you marvel at how small and tiny they are. Their little hands and feet are the size of one of your fingers and their head dwarfs in the palm of your hand. With everything being so tiny and so perfect, can you tell me WHY they need so much stuff??

I remember being seven months pregnant and walking into my local baby store with a list of the five things I need for my newborn: highchair, stroller, diaper bag, car seat and crib. When the salesperson walked up to me and saw my list, she congratulated me on a “great start” and passed me a 30 page catalog containing all the “MUST HAVE” baby items. Needless to say I left the store with many more items then were originally on my list.

From feeding to changing to sleeping, babies require a lot of gear, unfortunately they don’t come with a lot of real estate. Here are my top 3 tips for what to look for when buy baby products:

1. Ability to Collapse – When searching for a baby product, I always look for how small it is able to collapse. If the product is able to be stored under my couch or tucked in the corner, it is very valuable.

2. Multiuse – To limit the number of baby products in my house, I look for products that can be used in more then one way. A chair that can be used to support baby, provide entertainment and also be used to feed baby in the early days. Three activities in one saves me from owning three different contraptions.

3. Durability – Let’s face it, babies are eating, pooping and spitting machines. If you get through one day not covered in baby vomit, then you deserve a medal. When looking for a baby product, I keep this in mind and search for a product that is easy to clean and put back together.

    I love that it comes apart to fold flat and that it’s so cute to look at. So many baby things are bright and gaudy looking so babies are stimulated by the colors and whatnot (which is great developmentally) but for something they’re just sitting in and not really looking at, I love that it’s a soft, easy on the eyes color choice!
