Many people think that they should declutter room by room. This is not helpful for many reasons. The first reason is that you are handling too many different items and it can be difficult to determine which ones to keep.
The second reason is that once you declutter each room in your home, you will need to reorganize it to give everything a new home. Marie Kondo has a solution to that issue, and it is part of how she divides her home when she is going through the decluttering process.
Declutter with Marie Kondo: Categories
Marie Kondo believes that every home has five different categories worth of belongings. This is why she encourages everyone to declutter by category instead of room. She usually recommends tackling all clothing first, before continuing with books, papers, miscellaneous items, and finally all those sentimental items that you love.
Marie Kondo also never recommends doing a little bit of decluttering at a time, This is why she would frown upon you doing your closet today, one child’s closet next week, and the linen closet next month. That leaves too many days and weeks in between, which is plenty of time for you to lose your focus.
It is not going to be easy taking everything in one category out and placing it all into a pile in the center of a room, but it is necessary for Marie Kondo’s method to work. In fact, please be prepared for your home to look a lot worse before it looks amazingly decluttered!
Your goal is to work entirely on one category and get those items put away in their new spaces, before starting the next category.
Declutter with Marie Kondo: Visualize
As you are working on decluttering with the Marie Kondo method, you should instantly visualize exactly how you want your home to look like when you are finished with every category. This will help you as you decide which items bring you joy, and which ones do not.
Once you have pared down everything in each category, you can work on your new storage options.
Marie Kondo does not like purchasing new storage options, however, she loves utilizing boxes for everything! Place a shoe box inside your dresser drawers to create dividers or stack a few square boxes in a corner to create storage as well as visual appeal.
It is going to take a lot of effort and patience to declutter with Marie Kondo, but at the end, you will love how your home looks and feels!
