French Toast on a Budget
I wanted to share with you this precious family recipe. This recipe came from my Great Grandmother who was so warm and welcoming. Just like so many other recipes from the 19th century, French Toast are easy to make on a small budget.
Try this French Toast on a Budget recipe and it will transport you to Europe…
You will need:
6 slices of bread
4 eggs
1 cup of milk
A dash of vanilla extract
Butter Maple syrup for serving
Directions:
Mix the eggs, the milk and the vanilla extract. Put the butter in a frying pan on medium heat. Soak the bread in the mixture. Cook the bread in the frying pan until the underside is golden. Flip the bread over and cook on the otherside.
Voila!
My well guarded secret for the perfect French Toast
French toast is like bread pudding. It has to be creamy and soft in the inside and crispy on the outside. The best way to achieve this result is to use day-old stale bread which will soak up more mixture without falling apart. This is why we call French Toast “pain perdu” in French. “Pain perdu” means “lost bread” or stale bread if you prefer. Did you know that the earliest known reference for French toast is dated from the 4th century? Don’t wait any longer to try my recipe!

Hi Dawn, It can be any kind of bread that is not soft anymore. It can be left over of hamburger buns or the last slices of a loaf of bread.
