How to Maintain Granite and Natural Stone Countertops

Granite is one of the most popular materials for countertops in kitchens and bathrooms. Granite is perfect for countertops because of its durability and its beauty. It doesn’t require a lot of maintenance but some minimal care is recommended to keep it in great condition.

How to Maintain Granite and Natural Stone Countertops

Your granite countertops and all your natural stone countertops need to be maintained and sealed to protect the surface and prevent damage. The following three steps to caring for natural stones are essential- Clean often, Seal frequently, and Polish regularly.

How to Maintain Granite and Natural Stone Countertops

Step 1

Clean often.  Clean daily and after every meal. Even if your surface appears clean, clean it anyway. Minuscule particles can have a detrimental effect on your natural stone. Use Granite Gold Daily Cleaner® and make sure to avoid any common cleaners. Common cleaners and abrasives will break down the protective seal and damage your natural stones.

Step 2

Seal frequently. Sealing granite countertops and other natural stone surfaces with Granite Gold Sealer® maintains maximum surface protection. It provides superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching, and soil build-up. To check the integrity of the seal, pour water (3 inches in diameter) on the surface in different locations and let it sit for about 30 minutes. If you see a ring or a dark mark, it means that the water is penetrating the stone.

Step 3

Polish regularly. Polishing stone with Granite Gold Polish® after cleaning will bring out stone’s natural beauty and provide ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. While you are at it, polishing shower walls and tub surrounds will help prevent soap scum build-up.
