Marigolds
Marigolds are excellent starter plants for any garden. They’re easy to grow and maintain and do a great job of attracting helpful pollinators all season long. The carnation-like flowers thrive in full sun and withstand hot summer weather. Marigolds retain their blooms well into autumn and are most often used as companion plants to keep pests at bay, even in vegetable gardens. Hues range from yellow to orange to red, all of which colors that adult butterflies love. You don’t need to go crazy with marigolds. Think about using them as a simple garden border or for large pot planting.
Queen Anne’s Lace
While it’s common practice to pull weeds as they begin to pop up in the spring, don’t make the mistake of pulling (unidentified) early blooming flowers. Many are an important source of food for pollinators, as they wait for other plants to bloom. Queen Anne’s Lace, also known as wild carrot, is a long-stemmed plant with groupings of small white flowers at the top. Commonly found along roadsides and fields, it provides an excellent meal for butterflies and bees alike. Once planted, it comes back year after year.
Honeysuckle
Beautifully scented and low-maintenance, honeysuckle is a shrub-like plant that produces clusters of delicate, trumpet-shaped flowers from early spring to the end of summer. Ideally, honeysuckle requires full sun or at least partial shade to thrive. However, it can grow in full shade, but it probably won’t bloom. Butterflies and hummingbirds are wildly attracted to the yellowish flowers that do bloom. And, even in winter, red honeysuckle stems provide a pop of color when the plant’s leaves and flowers are gone.
I hope that you liked our Backyard Ideas: Plants That Attract Butterflies article. These are three (of many) plants that attract butterflies. They won’t be drawn to your garden or backyard overnight. But, once they find you, these lovely little creatures will definitely add beauty and serenity to your surroundings.
