DIY Wedding Tips
When planning a wedding it can be difficult to decide what items you can successfully create yourself and what items you should purchase. These DIY Wedding Tips will help you see the benefits and consequences of certain aspects of the DIY wedding! Not all do it yourself projects are created equal and some can be more expensive than purchasing premade items. Use these tips to help you decide which items to buy and which items to DIY for your big day!
Time Spent
One of the biggest stresses during the wedding planning process can be time…or lack thereof. There always seems to be ten things to do but only five minutes left to do them. One key thing to remember when deciding what to DIY and what to purchase is how much of your time it will consume. If a project can be completed in a moderate amount of time it is probably okay to consider but if it is going to require multiple days and extra hands you may want to reconsider. Your time, especially during the time leading up to your wedding day, will be very valuable. You will have lots of unexpected things pop up that will need your full attention. It is important to choose DIY projects that you can handle within those time constraints.
Cost of Materials
That DIY guestbook that you saw on Pinterest is lovely, and you could probably make it if you had all of the right materials and then it would technically be FREE! Be careful of this mindset. Nine times out of ten you are not going to have all of the materials just sitting around your house. You will have to buy them and then spend time creating a beautiful masterpiece. If you do a shopping search and find a similar guestbook for $30 be careful that you are not spending $25 in materials and then also having to invest time and effort into the DIY portion of the project. The key here is to make sure that the cost of materials is significantly LESS than the cost of purchasing a premade item. If it is not saving you quite a bit of money, it’s not going to be worth doing.
Flowers
This is a big one! Fresh flowers can be very expensive. If you have a specific flower in mind for your wedding bouquets and centerpieces check and see how much they cost before you get absolutely set on any particular bloom. I always suggest checking with a local florist even if you don’t think you can afford to buy your flowers from them. Many times they will be able to suggest flowers that are similar or more suited to your ideas; this small change might make local florist more affordable.
Another thing to consider when handling the flowers for your big day is arrangements. It can be affordable to use fresh flowers in your wedding if you are willing to do a little DIY project and make your own centerpieces and bouquets. Ask your florist how much it costs to have these items created. If that amount makes or breaks your flower budget there is a good chance you can make your own bouquets and centerpieces and still be able to have those gorgeous fresh flowers. Fear not, there are TONS of DIY videos on the internet that will show you the best ways to handle fresh flowers; it is not nearly as hard as you may think!
Favors
Favors can be an iffy subject in the DIY wedding planning world. Handmade favors are a lovely touch and can add a unique element to your special day but remember that your 300 person guest list also means 300 handmade specialties. Keep your numbers in mind when considering what and how to DIY your wedding favors. A nice hint here is to purchase favors and give them a DIY touch. Generic wedding favors are quite affordable and spicing them up and giving them an individualistic look can add character and save you money. You don’t necessarily have to purchase an expensive and unique wedding favor when you can partially DIY them!
I hope these tips and tricks have helped you realize what kinds of things you can DIY when wedding planning and what types of things you would be better off purchasing premade.

I often find that DIY comes more expensive than the one from the store, especially if you are looking for quality supplies. It’s extremely important to make sure it’s worth it, if you are trying to save money.

Great tips! We did a DIY wedding because we wanted to reflect us. But we only invited 50 guests so it was a little easier to do.

Great tips, weddings are so expensive these days. My son and his fiancee were to get married next year but estimates were so high they’ve had to put it off for another year and that is very sad.
