We recently had the opportunity to visit Philadelphia Historic District. We knew we were going to have a good time, but this trip was way above all our expectations. There were not enough hours in the day to do everything we wanted to enjoy. We fell in love with the city and its people and we would have loved to stay a few more days. We stayed for 4 days, 3 nights, and we enjoyed every minute of it.
Many thanks to Visit Philadelphia for this incredible experience. All opinions are mine.
Family Travel: Visit Philadelphia Historic District
Philadelphia Historic District is located in Center City East. It is the birthplace of American independence and is formed by its still vibrant neighborhoods of Old City, Society Hill and the Delaware River Waterfront. The Philadelphia Historic District is best known for its major Colonial-era sites including Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Betsy Ross House.
Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District
For the duration of our visit, we stayed at the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District. It was the absolute perfect place to stay for a number of reasons. The main one is that we were able to walk around the Historic District. We love to walk and discover new places as it allow us to feel the vibe and to take pictures. Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District is a beautiful hotel with an absolutely delicious breakfast buffet.
Franklin Square
During our visit to Philadelphia Historic District, we had the opportunity to walk around Franklin Square which is one of Philadelphia’s five original squares.
The kids loved riding the colorful Philly-themed carousel and playing a round of mini-golf that features tiny versions of local Philadelphia landmarks. Definitely a must-see in the Philadelphia Historic District.
Elfreth’s Alley
Many of Old City’s residents live in 18th-century row houses that line some of the country’s oldest streets. In fact, the Elfreth’s Alley, named for blacksmith Jeremiah Elfreth, with its 32 houses, is the oldest continuously occupied residential street in the United States. Elfreth’s Alley includes two museum houses about the living history of the Alley. Elfreth’s Alley is located between Second Street and the Delaware River.
The Franklin Fountain and Shane Confectionery
During our stay in Philadelphia Historic District, we stopped by The Franklin Fountain and Shane Confectionery. The Franklin Fountain is a fun retro style ice cream parlor known for their handmade ice cream, fountain sodas, shakes, splits, sundaes and customized bars. We tried the coffee ice cream, the splits, and a root beer float. Unbelievable!
Shane Confectionery, which is owned by The Franklin Fountain, is a hand crafted candy shop. We tried some of their chocolate and fudge. It was so delicious! We are still talking about it today.
Liberty Bell
After all that sugar, we walked to the Liberty Bell Center to see the iconic relic. The Liberty Bell shines as one of the world’s most recognizable symbols of freedom. The kids learned about the role that the Bell played and still plays in America’s civil rights movement.
Blue Cross River Rink Summer Fest
One of our most unforgettable memories were created at the Blue Cross River Rink Summer Fest. Rocking out all night to live DJs, the kids enjoyed taking a few laps around the outdoor roller skating rink.
We completely felt like kids again riding the Ferris wheel and drinking lemonade. The arcade games and the mini golf were also really fun. Definitely a night to remember by Waterfront.
We had so much fun during our visit to Philadelphia that the kids and I literally had a tiny break down as we were left. This is how much we enjoyed Philly and it’s welcoming citizens. We will be back, promise. We have no choice but to go back as there are still many things we didn’t have time to do. My heart is breaking a little as I’m writing this. No worries, it’s all good. See you again Philly!

One day I WILL visit Philadelphia & see all these amazing places! My ancestors are from Philly & it’s on my bucket list to travel there with my family. The historic district would be quite suitable for the trip.

It looks so quaint! And sounds like a perfectly wonderful vacation! I wish we had something like that on our side of the country… it’s a little far for a ‘quick trip’, but it’s the perfect 3 day weekend!

We had so much fun hanging out together in Philadelphia. Love Summerfest and riding the ferris wheel with you!! Give those girls an extra hug. Hope to see you all again another time. I am missing the constant activity right now actually. So much that is enjoyable about just getting up every morning to explore a new place.
