Have you heard of McDonaldization?
I was irresistibly drawn to the Big Ideas Simply Explained series. These books are filled with Big Ideas, theories, and amazing concepts that are super interesting. The quality of the graphics and the creative typography make all these Big Ideas easy to understand. The content of these book inspired me very deeply and even opened my mind to ideas I wasn’t paying attention to before.
The Sociology Book
The latest title in the Big Ideas series is The Sociology Book, an introduction to sociology that features images and quotes from the world’s most renowned sociologists. You will find in this book some of the most interesting subjects like the Disneyization and the McDonaldization of society. I was far from imagining that one of the Big Ideas in this book was about McDonald’s virtually affecting every aspect of society. From their business model to the efficiency of their operations, McDonald’s has shaped many other corporations. Also focusing on leading issues such as social inequality and urban living, this book gives an amazing overview of our modern society.
The Psychology Book
From its philosophical roots through behaviorism, psychotherapy, and developmental psychology, The Psychology Book looks at all the greats from Pavlov and Skinner to Freud and Jung. One big idea from Boris Cyrulnik really got me thinking: “Our history does not determine our destiny” Boris Cyrulnik (1937-). Knowing that Freud had said that early childhood trauma can override any genetic, social, or psychologist resilience factor, the idea that history doesn’t determine our destiny is wonderful. According to Boris Cyrulnik, resilient people can find a way to overcome what has happened and find the strength to move forward. He believes that children are capable of complete recovery from trauma. This Big Idea is definitely one to think about.
The Business Book
The Business Book is the perfect companion for anyone wanting to learn key theories of business and management. I am keeping this book on my night table as I am trying to assimilate the work of great thinkers and leaders. Like one of the Big Ideas in this book, I believe that great things don’t happen suddenly. While we know that effort, time, and money have to be invested, trying to grow your business too fast can actually lead to failure. This book is filled with great graphics and simple explanations of business concepts, from managing risk to thinking outside the box.
These three books are definitely worth reading and they will start very interesting discussions amongst your family. There are many other books in the fascinating Big Ideas series and I am planning on getting the Science Book next.

No, I’ve never heard of McDonaldization before. One of my daughters probably knows The Business Book as she has her Doctorate in business psychology.
